VoLANteers Help out Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity Northwest Harris County (NWHC) is a nonprofit interfaith ministry whose mission is to build safe, affordable homes for people in need. Over the last 25 years, the organization has built houses for hundreds of families by working with volunteers who want to give back to their community.

On Sept. 19th, 15 VoLANteers joined in this mission by helping out at Hamill Crossing, a neighborhood designed and built by Habitat to house as many as 47 families. The houses, approximately 1300 square feet in area, are built from lumber and fiber cement and are Energy Star 3.0 rated to help families save money.

The organization was finishing up the final three houses on the street, and VoLANteers assisted with one of the houses. Working along with the family members who would be living at the house, VoLANteers helped paint the interior and exterior of the house, assembled kitchen cabinets and put up fencing.

“It was great to see my colleagues working hard for seven hours on a Saturday to help others,” said Abby Stanhouse, a VoLANteer. “The families were so grateful for our help. Also, it was a great bonding experience for all of us.”
