A sprawling new K-12 campus for little Sheldon Independent School District is the newest addition in the pipeline to rapid growth in northeast Harris County, with construction set to begin this month.
The region that in recent years saw the completion of Beltway 8 and the start of the 4,000-acre Generation Park business and retail development will soon get a state-of-the-art, 580,000-square-foot campus built on 267 acres bordered by the Beltway.
“The growth kind of took off over the past few years,” said King Davis, superintendent of Sheldon ISD, which has one high school. “We’re starting to plan for that.”
The district has grown by 23.3 percent in the past five years, Davis said, making it the second-fastest-growing district in the county, behind Tomball ISD. With 8,948 students at the end of 2016, the district averaged 500 students per year in the past two years.
