Lockwood, Andrews & Newnan, Inc. (LAN), a leading firm in planning, engineering and program management, has announced that its president, Wayne Swafford, P.E., SE, has been honored with the inaugural LAN Excellence Award.
The award, the highest accolade within the organization, was established to recognize exceptional achievements that contribute to the firm’s growth, reputation and success. It celebrates individuals who exemplify excellence, dedication and leadership at LAN.
Swafford joined the firm in 2017. Since then, he has brought more than 40 years of experience in engineering, project management and people management. As president, he has played a key role in shaping LAN’s strategic direction and overseeing its operations. His leadership was instrumental during the firm’s ownership transition in 2024, when family investment trust Hennick & Co acquired it. Under his guidance, LAN navigated the transition with stability and positioned itself for significant growth.
“Wayne exemplifies exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to the civil engineering field,” said Ed Benes, P.E., LAN’s chief executive officer. “His commitment, as demonstrated through his actions and leadership, is an inspiring benchmark for future generations of engineers and project managers. This award recognizes Wayne’s contributions and service. Thank you, Wayne, for inspiring us with your actions.”
Swafford is also a mentor to emerging leaders at LAN, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence. His guidance has empowered the next generation of engineers, ensuring LAN remains at the forefront of the industry.
Before joining LAN, Swafford served as vice president of facility operations at the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and as vice president at AECOM Technology Corporation, where he managed transportation infrastructure projects across the Midwest, Southeast, and Eastern United States. He is president-elect for the 2024-2025 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Texas term.
The LAN Excellence Award, presented annually, includes a commemorative trophy and is reserved for employees whose contributions have significantly impacted the firm. Recipients are selected from nominations submitted by senior leadership, including the president, chief operating officer, business group directors and practice leaders.
