Trinity River Authority’s MC-7 and MC-8 Relief Interceptor Project Honored as Sewer Project of the Year by Underground Infrastructure

The Trinity River Authority’s (TRA) Central Regional Wastewater System Mountain Creek-7 and Mountain Creek-8 Relief Interceptor Project (CRWS MC-7 and MC-8) in Grand Prairie, Texas, has received the Sewer Project of the Year award at the 2025 Underground Infrastructure Conference. This accolade recognizes the project’s significant impact on infrastructure resilience and innovation in the underground infrastructure sector.
Designed and managed by Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN), the CRWS MC-7 and MC-8 project was initiated to meet the expanding needs of Grand Prairie, a vital part of the rapidly growing Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. As one of the fastest-growing regions in both Texas and the United States, Grand Prairie’s existing wastewater infrastructure was reaching its capacity. This project was essential to support the city’s ongoing growth and provide a sustainable, reliable wastewater management solution for the future.
The project included the construction of over 20,000 linear feet of interceptor pipelines, ranging from 69 to 84 inches in diameter, through a densely developed corridor. This upgrade was crucial to replace an existing undersized and failing sewer interceptor, thereby improving water flow and management. The project required extensive coordination with local authorities and stakeholders, including TRA, the City of Grand Prairie and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), to navigate the construction challenges in the heavily developed corridor.
“This was a challenging but certainly fun project to be a part of,” said Justin Reeves, business group director at LAN. “The improvements were very much needed to enhance system capacity and resilience, reducing the risk of overflows. However, the alignment presented significant stakeholder, hydraulic and environmental challenges that added to the complexity. Ultimately, the pipeline was installed successfully in two phases, and working with staff at TRA included some innovation and creativity. This project exemplifies our commitment to delivering innovative and sustainable infrastructure solutions that meet the needs of our communities.”
The Underground Infrastructure Awards, formerly known as the Underground Construction Awards, celebrate leading innovations, projects and individuals that have significantly impacted diverse infrastructure markets. Winners are selected by a distinguished panel of industry experts and leaders and announced at the Underground Infrastructure Conference each year.
