The Texas District of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (TexITE) named Mark Mathis, P.E., as its 2021 Transportation Engineer of the Year. The award, given since 1974, is presented annually to recognize an individual member of TexITE for outstanding practice, teaching or research of the science and art of transportation engineering in Texas. The award was presented during a virtual ceremony on June 25.

A civil engineer with 36 years of experience, Mathis is a senior project manager for traffic engineering at Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc., (LAN), a national planning, engineering and program management firm. Since joining LAN in 2018, Mathis has grown the firm’s traffic engineering practice significantly and positioned the firm for several major rail and transit projects.

Some of the notable projects that Mathis has managed include various traffic signal design and plans, specifications and estimates for the cities of Fort Worth, Dallas, Frisco, Plano and Allen, master transportation plan update for the City of Copperas Cove, railroad crossing safety inspection and preemption design for the City of Leander, two TEXRail transit-oriented development stations, as well as a quiet zone implementation for the City of Colleyville.

Mathis has also made significant contributions to TexITE through his leadership and expertise. In 2011, Mathis served as the local arrangement chairman for the TexITE Spring Conference, bringing the conference back to Fort Worth for the first time in over 10 years. Due the success and popularity of that conference, TexITE has returned to Fort Worth on a regular cycle. In addition, he has served the Greater Fort Worth Section of ITE as secretary/treasurer, vice president and president. Since he completed his term as president, Mathis has continued to serve the Greater Fort Worth Section as section representative on the TexITE Board and currently serves as the section administrator.

“The award is a fitting tribute to Mark’s continuing and outstanding contributions to the transportation engineering profession over the last four decades,” said Tom Ellis, P.E., LAN’s vice president and director of the firm’s Transportation Business Group. “We are all very proud of this accomplishment.”

Mathis holds a bachelor’s degree in technical writing from the University of North Texas, and a master’s degree in civil engineering – transportation from the University of Texas at Arlington. He is a licensed professional engineer in Texas.
