Improvements to Galveston-Bolivar Ferry Facilities – Texas Department of Transportation

Galveston Texas

For over a decade, LAN has partnered with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to enhance the Galveston-Bolivar Ferry facilities. Our multi-phased, multi-year efforts focus on improving capacity, functionality, and efficiency while ensuring uninterrupted service for millions of passengers annually.

LAN’s work includes:

  • Maintenance Dock Reconfiguration: Designed and constructed a phased replacement of bulkheads, wharf decks, docking hardware, and guide dolphins. Expanded the dock system from four to five berths while ensuring continuous operations.
  • Ferry Landing Renovations: Upgraded ferry slips, transfer spans, and shoreline infrastructure at multiple landings. Replaced utility systems, improved storm drainage, and designed control gates, fenders, and pedestrian facilities.
  • Parking and Staging Improvements: Developed a 120-vehicle elevated parking structure, integrated equipment storage, and redesigned ferry entry and exit ramps to improve operational efficiency.
  • Ferry Maintenance Building Modernization: Renovated a 5,000-square-foot facility with energy-efficient systems, updated ventilation, and specialized equipment for ferry maintenance.
  • Future Planning and Engineering Studies: Evaluated options for additional ferry landings to meet growing demand. Assessed traffic flow, staging lanes, environmental impacts, and navigational challenges.

LAN’s innovative approaches, including advanced 3D modeling for design visualizations, have streamlined stakeholder approvals and facilitated efficient project execution. Our in-depth knowledge of TxDOT’s ferry facilities, combined with our commitment to excellence, positions LAN as a key partner in maintaining and modernizing this critical transportation network.
