Greenspoint Waterline Project – City of Houston
Houston Texas
The Greenspoint Waterline project was designed to transmit surface water to the north and northwest areas of the City and adjacent areas of Harris County and supply those areas currently served by the wells so that the wells can be abandoned. The overall project was comprised of five contracts, totaling approximately 46,000 LF of 66-inch water transmission line and several distribution system extensions consisting of approximately 4,000 LF of 12-, 16-, and 20-inch water lines to improve delivery pressures, flow and fire protection.
The complex, fast-track schedule of the project required development of special design provisions for the construction drawings, and specifications to increase construction productivity. These included allowances for multiple contractor work crews and constructing multiple system interconnections so that sections of the pipeline can be isolated, disinfected, tested, and placed in service throughout the contract period.
The development of a pipeline disinfection protocol to use water from one section (between isolation valves) to the adjacent section reduced the water used to disinfect the line and the amount of potable water to be discharged into area waterways. Bedding material specifications permitted the use of native cohesion less materials encountered along the project site, reducing noise and emission levels associated with import trucking operations.
LAN performed the design, construction management, and real estate acquisition services for five contracts and engaged in extensive coordination between City of Houston and Harris County, numerous engineering consultants throughout the design phase, as well as coordination with multiple stakeholders and agencies.
