Force Main Design – City of North Bay Village

North Bay Village Florida

The City of North Bay Village is a three-island community situated in northeast Miami-Dade County between the cities of Miami and Miami Beach. The City engaged the services of Metro Equipment Services, Inc. (MES) and Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN) to design and construct a new wastewater force main. The project, approximately 13,500 LF of 16-inch diameter pipeline, included three horizontal directional drillings (HDD) across the environmentally sensitive Biscayne Bay and Pelican Harbor Bird Sanctuary.

The 16-inch force main improved the City’s wastewater system and reduced the likelihood of untreated wastewater discharge (overflows) during wet weather events. The proposed 16-inch force main served as a replacement pipeline to the existing 12-inch force main that transmitted wastewater from the City of North Bay Village to Miami Beach’s wastewater system, which was then re-pumped to MDWASD’s Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP). Because the project route followed John F. Kennedy Causeway, the only access route to the City and also a hurricane evacuation route for the City and Miami Beach, open-cut construction and resulting traffic disruptions on the causeway were reduced by lengthening two of the HDD crossings.

The pipeline was designed, permitted, constructed, flushed, pressure tested, and certified as required by MDWASD, all permitting agencies having jurisdiction, and as specified. LAN’s design process, construction management, and permitting expertise helped deliver a project that reduced construction cost and time, all while protecting environmentally sensitive areas along the route.
