Brio Rapid Transit System – City of El Paso
El Paso Texas
LAN prepared conceptual engineering, preliminary engineering, and final design, and provided construction-phase services for Sun Metro Transit’s first higher-capacity form of transit.
The Mesa Corridor, opened in October 2014, is an 8.6-mile, $27.1 million corridor that provided enhanced transit services within existing roadway right-of-way beginning at the Downtown Transfer Center and ending at the Westside Transfer Center. The project budget included funding from the Federal Transit Authority (FTA) totaling $13.5 million and TxDOT totaling $6.1 million.
For the Alameda Corridor, LAN prepared conceptual engineering, preliminary engineering, and final design, and provided construction-phase services for the 14.5-mile, $35.5 million project. The portion of the new BRT system provides enhanced transit services within existing roadway right-of-way beginning at the Downtown Transfer Center Five Points Terminal and ending at the Mission Valley Transfer Center. The project was 100 percent locally funded.
The BRT project goals required design and construction of facilities to improve transit service by making “all reasonable, cost-effective transit improvements without a major capital investment in new infrastructure.” LAN met these goals by developing designs for construction of transportation system management improvements, including transit priority signalization, branded transit stations, real-time schedule information, on-platform automated ticket vending and fare collection, improved sidewalk connectivity, pedestrian illumination, landscaping, and new branded transit vehicles.
