LAN and Alamo Colleges

Mar 4, 2025

LAN has been extensively involved with the Alamo Colleges District since 2006, providing a range of services that support the district’s capital improvement planning and operational efficiency.

Facility Condition Assessment and Maintenance Planning: LAN has conducted ongoing facility condition assessments across all Alamo Colleges campuses, initially assessing over 200 facilities. This effort was part of a capital improvements program that increased the district’s total square footage by approximately 50% to 4.6 million square feet. LAN’s assessments have been crucial in updating facility condition data, especially after renovations, and have added nearly one million square feet of new facilities to the inventory. These assessments support Alamo Colleges in understanding their operational needs and making cost-effective decisions for long-term planning.

Capital Improvement and Maintenance Tax Notes (MTN) Program: LAN has played a significant role in developing a $270 million capital improvement plan funded by Maintenance Tax Notes. This program addresses a backlog of needs identified through facility condition assessments and asset management tracking efforts led by LAN. The MTN program includes comprehensive facility renovations and improvements to more than 50% of Alamo Colleges’ facilities, totaling 5.6 million square feet.

Energy and Sustainability Initiatives: LAN has been involved in sustainable initiatives, such as exploring alternative energy sources for the Alamo Colleges District. This included a study for a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant, which recommended the installation of a natural gas-fired CHP plant to optimize power generation needs and cost-effectiveness.

Winter Storm Resiliency: Following the winter storm in February 2021, LAN was contracted to develop cold weather resiliency strategies for Alamo Colleges. This involved creating a list of over 400 potential remediation strategies across eight campus locations, amounting to $13 million, to mitigate future damage from extreme winter events.

Geographic Information System (GIS) Development: LAN has been instrumental in creating a district-wide facilities GIS for Alamo Colleges, providing a comprehensive operational picture of approximately 5.6 million square feet across the district’s campuses. This system supports data-driven decision-making and enhances campus management from a geospatial perspective.

Program Management and Design Standards: LAN has developed educational specifications and design standards for Alamo Colleges’ use in their $450 million Bond Program. These standards reflect the business processes used by Alamo Colleges to deliver projects, ensuring clear expectations and efficient project execution.

LAN’s long-term partnership with Alamo Colleges has been characterized by continuous service provision, including program management, facility assessments, and strategic planning, making LAN a reliable extension of the district’s internal staff.
