Trinity River Authority’s CRWS Junction Box 1020J Replacement Honored as Sewer Project of the Year at Underground Infrastructure Conference

(Grand Prairie, Texas – February 19, 2026) – The Trinity River Authority’s (TRA) Central Regional Wastewater System (CRWS) Junction Box 1020J Replacement and Improvement Project received the Sewer Project of the Year award at the 2025 Underground Infrastructure Conference. This accolade recognizes projects that demonstrate innovation, complexity and lasting impact on critical underground infrastructure systems.

Designed and managed by Lockwood, Andrews & Newnam, Inc. (LAN), the project addressed the failure of a major reinforced concrete junction structure serving TRA’s wastewater conveyance system in Grand Prairie, Texas. The structure, located at the head of the Jefferson Avenue Relief Tunnel, conveys approximately 68 million gallons per day to the TRA Central Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant, making reliability essential to regional operations.

To restore long-term system performance, the project realigned and consolidated multiple large-diameter interceptors and replaced the deteriorated junction structure with a corrosion-resistant fiberglass fitting engineered to extend service life and reduce future maintenance costs. Installed more than 50 feet below ground within a floodplain, the work required advanced bypass pumping and live flow management to maintain uninterrupted operations throughout construction.

“This was a highly complex and critical project for TRA,” said Justin Reeves, senior business group director at LAN. “The structural failure required a technically sound solution that would not only restore reliability but improve long-term system performance without interrupting existing services. It was an excellent project to partner with TRA to deliver – for only a short section of pipeline replacement, it required detailed technical structural, hydraulic and operational analyses that ultimately were delivered smoothly through construction to create a more resilient system for their customers.”

The Underground Infrastructure Awards, formerly known as the Underground Construction Awards, celebrate leading innovations, projects and industry professionals that have significantly impacted diverse infrastructure markets. Winners are selected by a distinguished panel of industry experts and announced at the Underground Infrastructure Conference each year.
