Auburn Dry Grocery and Perishable Distribution Center – Safeway, Inc.

Auburn, Washington

Safeway’s one million-SF distribution center design includes a dry grocery warehouse, refrigerated warehouse, return processing area, office space, and a truck maintenance shop.  The facility’s durability was increased by placing steel facing on curbs and seven-foot high curbs on the back of docks to prevent truck damage. A two-stage absorption process on the food produce floors was used to reduce slippage and deterioration. The warehouse is engineered with three temperature levels ranging from -15° F to 55° F, with large evaporators having small compressors, low head pressure capabilities, and humidity control on the truck docks to provide energy savings. Through design and applied value engineering, the owner achieved initial operational cost reductions and savings of over $1 million.
