Lumpkin Road Improvements

Houston, TX

LAN designed 3,600 LF of roadway reconstruction along Lumpkin Road to meet current geometric requirements for safety considerations, as well as improve access for nearly 8,000 Houston Community College students. The mobility improvements included widening Lumpkin from a two-lane asphalt open ditch section to a 40-foot concrete curb and gutter section with one lane in each direction and a center continuous left-turn-lane. Additionally, the new roadway cross section and driveway access improvements were designed to reduce existing conflicts at loading docks.

A key project component included innovative drainage improvements to meet City of Houston criteria while utilizing adjacent infrastructure to benefit the area. The existing Westview Detention Basin was deepened, and enlarged storm sewer boxes and connections were designed to provide an additional 20 acre-feet of flood storage capacity to the adjacent community. The added storage more than doubles the volume of the detention basin that existed previously.

New six-foot wide sidewalks, upgrades to existing traffic signals, and new pedestrian lighting were also included with the project to improve pedestrian access and safety. A bus shelter was added to the METRO bus stop at the southwest corner of Lumpkin and Westview.
