Sacramento Completing Rail Extension (Source: Civil Engineering)

February 3, 2015—The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SRTD) plans to complete construction this summer of a project that will connect the downtown region with neighborhoods to the south via a 4.3 mi extension of its lightrail system. But the transit project, which will terminate at Cosumnes River College, presents distinct challenges with respect to both its alignment and its operation.

The project is the second phase of a larger extension project that totals more than 10 mi that the SRTD began planning in 1993. It addresses population growth in the southern suburbs of the capital city, which has created commuter congestion on both California State Highway 99 and Interstate 5.
